Singapore is a city-state located 1 degree above the equator, off the Malaysian Peninsula. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Stamford Raffles, ruled by the Japanese from 1942 - 1945, achieved self-independence in 1962 and independence in 1965. Today, Singapore is now regarded as a first-world country.
